Cannabis Act Offences

The Cannabis Act, which came into effect in Canada on October 17, 2018, sets out the legal framework for the production, distribution, sale, and possession of cannabis. Under the Cannabis Act, it is illegal to:

  • Possess more than 30 grams of dried cannabis in public
  • Share more than 30 grams of dried cannabis with others
  • Grow more than four cannabis plants per residence for personal use
  • Purchase or sell cannabis, except through a government-licensed retailer
  • Give or sell cannabis to a minor

Violations of the Cannabis Act can result in significant penalties, including fines, imprisonment, and a criminal record. The exact penalties will depend on the specific circumstances of the offense and the offender’s prior criminal history.
